Gary Dixon, serving his third term as Wood County Prec. Three constable, will face off against John McQueen in the March 3 Republican Primary.

Dixon is a fully-licensed peace officer and has been an active Texas peace officer for more than 20 years. He has served Prec. 3, where he has lived since 1977, since he became constable in 2009.

He is a graduate of Paris Junior College and Kilgore Police Academy. While working in the Hawkins Oil Field, Dixon completed three fire-fighter training schools at Texas A&M-College Station.

In the mid-1990s, Dixon operated a U.S. Army licensed radio station for the Military Affiliated Radio System and worked several years as the District 12 radio officer for the Texas Division of Emergency Management, which serves 18 counties.

Dixon worked for Smith County from 1999-2008 where he was promoted to sergeant deputy constable and was the field training officer, also insuring that all deputies maintained Texas Commission On Law Enforcement training requirements.

Dixon served as presiding officer of the Dallas Scottish Rite Fraternity in 2004 and continues to enroll patients into the Dallas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled and Burned Children where they receive free treatment.

In 2010, Texas Governor Rick Perry honored Dixon for his service to others by commissioning him an admiral in the Texas Navy.

In addition to holding advanced Texas Civil Process Certification, Texas Association of Hostage Negotiators Certification and many Federal Emergency Management training certifications, Dixon received his Master Peace Officer Certification from TCOLE in 2011.

Dixon is a member of the East Texas Justice of the Peace and Constables Association and of the Justices of the Peace and Constables Association of Texas. He is also a member of the Sheriff’s Association of Texas, the Hawkins Area Chamber of Commerce and the Holly Lake Republican Club.

Dixon and his wife, Patricia, are members of First Baptist Church and attend Holly Brook Baptist. They have three children and one grandson.

John McQueen has been deeply rooted in East Texas as a lifetime resident of Wood County. He graduated from Mineola High School in 2000 and from Kilgore Police Academy in 2001.

He began his 17-year law enforcement career in Big Sandy with the police chief who sponsored him through academy. He remained there for four years, first as a patrolman and then as patrol sergeant.

At Tyler ISD Police Dept., McQueen was a school resource officer for six years before moving to Gladewater Police Department for five years.

In 2017, McQueen began working for Wood County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy and was quickly promoted to patrol sergeant. McQueen is Sergeant Investigator assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division. He is also a Marine Safety Officer and holds an advanced TCOLE license.

McQueen has experience as a first line supervisor, field training officer and in criminal investigations. He is certified in interview techniques, patrol rifle and taser certified, and is active shooter certified through Texas State University Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT).

McQueen has been married for 14 years to his wife Christy, a coach and teacher at Hawkins ISD. They have two children who also attend Hawkins ISD. They are members of First Baptist Church of Hawkins where McQueen serves as deacon.
