Lady Bulldogs blast their way to first district win

The Quitman Lady Bulldogs shook off the bad luck of the past and unloaded on Kemp Friday with a 10-hit barrage leading to an 18-2 trouncing of the Lady Yellowjackets.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Quitman came back with 12 big runs in the second inning and six more in the third inning in a game called by the mercy rule. Pitcher Hannah Baucom held Kemp to just two hits.

“I’m really happy for the girls. We were disciplined at the plate, got hits when we needed them and played good defense. Hannah (Baucom) pitched a great game and it was good to have Shayla (Smith) back behind the plate,” Coach Chris Veach said. “Shala has been out since our scrimmages and she did a great job. It was a great effort all the way around. We are happy to get the victory, but we need to keep the same intensity the rest of the way.”

Shelby Hayes was the offensive spark for the win going 3-3 with two singles, a double and two runs scored. MaKayla Mitchell went 2-3 with a single and a double and scored three times. Madalyn Spears had a double and four RBI. Brittany Walls scored three times and had a pair of RBI while Baucom scored twice and had two RBI.

Earlier in the week, the Lady Bulldogs lost to a tough Grand Saline team 9-3. Quitman could not get much going offensively as the Lady Indians held them to just five hits in the contest. Mitchell went 2-3 and scored a run and Shelby Bettis had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. Walls added a double and run scored.

“We just never could get anything going offensively. We put the ball in play all night, unfortunately they were right at them,” added Veach.

The Lady Bulldogs don’t play again until they travel to Alba-Golden to take on the Lady Panthers Friday at 6 p.m.
