Just when you think you have it figured out in high school and college football, something will happen to bring you back to reality. Take this weekend, Sabine pulled off the big upset, beating state’s fourth-ranked team, West Rusk, 23-7 Friday night and Saturday Purdue destroying Ohio State.
Mineola faces Sabine in their homecoming game Friday night. Sabine used to be one of those teams where you could just about expect to put a big W down in the win column, but not this year. The Cardinals upset the 10-3A DI applecart with their win over the Raiders.
Tatum sits alone at the top of the district at 3-0 followed by West Rusk at 3-1, Gladewater and Sabine are both 2-1, Mineola 1-2, White Oak 1-3 and Winnsboro 0-4. Mineola is very much alive in the playoff chase. Sabine’s district loss was against Tatum in a wild 56-38 game. The Yellowjackets have more than just homecoming to play for this week at Meredith Memorial Stadium.
Quitman is coming off a 52-0 loss at Harmony while Alba-Golden lost a tough 3-2 battle in a driving rain Friday night. The Panthers need to win out to have playoff hopes. Quitman entertains a winless Frankston team this Friday at Bud Moody Field. Both teams will be playing hard to get that first district win. The Bulldogs won their opener 30-6 over Cumby to break their 43 game losing streak. The next step is to win a district game, something Quitman has not done since Oct. of 2013 when they beat Eustace at Bud Moody. This is going to be the week the Bulldogs go home with a win. It’s my birthday and writing about a win would be a good present for this old man.
Alba-Golden played excellent defense in their loss to Grand Saline. The Panthers were defeated when Grand Saline made a field goal in the final quarter. The Panthers drove into Indian territory, but handed the ball over on downs as the seconds ticked away. The Panthers must win out in the last three games over Troup, Quitman and Frankston to make the playoffs. I’m sure Coach Derek Smith will have them ready to take on Troup this week on the road.
Quitman’s Lady Bulldogs are preparing for a bi-district game to be played next Monday or Tuesday. They are waiting to find out if they play Dallas Madison or Life Oak cliff from District 11-3A. The Alb-Golden Lady Panthers need a win in Tuesday’s district final at Rains. The Lady Panthers are looking forward to a return to the playoffs.
It won’t be long until basketball season will be starting. We have several good basketball teams in the area and it should be an exciting year. Mineola girls and boys teams will both be good. The girls are coming off a superb year and have most of last year’s team coming back. Quitman girls under Coach Amanda Hodge returns just about everybody and they are looking to a big turnaround this season. Coach Mike McMinn moves over to coach girls full time in Yantis where he does have all five starters back from last year’s playoff team. The Owls are in a tough new eight team district, but they hope to continue the playoff tradition.
