School programs, a parade and a ceremony will celebrate veterans of the United States military this week.
The Alba-Golden School District invites all community veterans to their Veterans Day Assembly on Friday. The district will serve breakfast for veterans at 8:15 a.m. and then have an assembly thanking them for their service at 9 a.m.
Mineola School District will also hold a Veterans Day Program on Friday. The program is set for 9 a.m. and Rev. Raymond Williams, a Vietnam veteran and brother of Johnny Johnson, is slated to be the guest speaker. This annual program was started by the Mineola Junior Historians in 1998.
The Mineola Marine Corps League Detachment 1278 is organizing the annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday. The event will begin at 11:11 a.m. and will conclude with a ceremony at the gazebo in downtown Mineola. District Judge Jeff Fletcher and Marine Corps League Commandant Kelly Smith will be the speakers.
A special salute to veterans will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Jim Hogg city Park in Quitman. State Representative Cole Hefner will be the keynote speaker for the event. Patriotic music will be provided by the Quitman High School Proud Blue Band.
First Baptist Church Pastor Gabe Martin will give the invocation and local Boy Scouts will present the colors and lead the pledge.
The Quitman-Lake Fork Kiwanis Club will serve hot dogs and there will be a table with information about veterans programs in Wood County and the surrounding area.
