Wood County Sheriff’s Department activities for the past week included:

Sept. 27 - Deputy Melissa Pollard was dispatched to Private Road 8695 in Big Wood Springs for a theft report. The complainant stated he had located a residence which had an illegally installed water meter providing water to the home. Photographs were taken at the scene and have been turned over to CID.

Deputy Pollard took a report of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle from a Winnsboro resident. The complainant stated that her Ford Mustang GT was taken from her residence on Aug. 6 at approximately 1 a.m. The woman was unaware that the car was missing until a Department of Public Safety trooper showed up at her residence and informed her that the car had been located, unoccupied, where it had been wrecked. According to the woman, her car had been left unlocked, with the keys inside, and she believes that a male friend, with whom she had been drinking earlier in the evening, took the car without her permission, wrecked it, and left it abandoned. The case has been turned over to an investigator.

Sept. 26 - Sergeant Donivan South was dispatched to a residence on County Road 4591 in the Winnsboro area just before 4:30 a.m. after a woman called 911 to report her neighbor’s house was on fire. South found a mobile home fully engulfed in flames and the fire department attempting to extinguish the blaze. The woman who reported the blaze saw an unknown male on a motorcycle leaving the property just after she was alerted to the fire. South recorded information, provided by the home’s resident, regarding the man who left on the motorcycle. South confiscated drug paraphernalia as well from a make-shift on the property after he was notified by fire department personnel about a possible meth lab. The case has been turned over to the fire marshal.

Sept. 25 - Deputies Jeremy Ragsdale and Brandie Cunningham, along with Sergeant Austin Cryer, were dispatched to Highway 80 at CR 2231 for a vehicle accident. Ragsdale arrived to find a Toyota Prius in the ditch with a male driver still inside the vehicle. Ragsdale noted that the man smelled of alcohol and refused to provide identification. A bottle containing what appeared to be an alcoholic beverage was removed from the man’s pants pocket and he was transported to jail after refusing to perform standardized field sobriety tests. Deputies were forced to stop several times during the transport due to the man being combative. Mark Edward Johnson, 31, of Mineola, was booked into jail. He is charged with driving while intoxicated with open container, second offense; driving while license invalid with prior conviction(s) without financial responsibility and resisting arrest, search or transport. Bonds were set totaling $13,000.

Sept. 23 - Sergeant Cryer took a report from a Lindale man who stated that he and his son had answered an ad on Craig’s List for a 100-acre deer lease on Farm-to-Market Road 778. The man stated he and his son each paid the advertiser $1,000 and later learned the lease is only 65-acres and was not owned by the man who was attempting to lease it. The two requested a refund of their money but have been unsuccessful. The investigation is ongoing.

Sept. 21 - Deputy Aaron Warren took a report of theft from a complainant on CR 3859 in the Hawkins area. The woman advised that she and her husband are in the middle of constructing a new home and various stainless steel appliances had been stolen. Warren noted that entry into the structure was made through an unlocked window in the rear of the building and the appliances were removed through the back door. The case has been referred to CID for ongoing investigation.

Deputies Tucker George and Kevin Atkinson were dispatched to a residence at Holiday Villages on a report of a disturbance. A woman stated that her husband was intoxicated and a loud argument had ensued between her, her son and her husband. The woman also reported that her husband was attempting to leave the residence. Before arrival at the home, George spotted a vehicle matching the description given by the woman and a traffic stop was initiated. After interviewing all parties, Michael Brown, age 55, of Quitman, was arrested for public intoxication. He was transported to jail without incident. The case is closed.

Deputy Heather Bailey arrested Michael Hugh Landrum, 30, of Mineola, after he was found to be in violation of bond conditions that made it unlawful for him to be within 200 feet of the woman with whom he was traveling. The man openly admitted he was aware that he was not supposed to be with the woman and was taken into custody and booked into jail without incident. He is charged with violation of bond conditions (family violence), a class A misdemeanor. Bond was set at $15,000.

Deputy George took a theft report from a complainant on CR 1688 in the Alba area. The man advised a hammock was missing from his front yard. The man also stated he had last seen the hammock in place three days earlier, when he came out of his residence and found a woman lying in the hammock. According to the complainant, he had to make the woman leave his property. George talked to the suspect, who allowed a search to be conducted of her residence. The hammock was not located but the complainant stated he did want to pursue charges in the matter. The case has been forwarded to an investigator for warrant review.
