If you were at the Quitman- Rains game, you saw a Bulldog team that continues to fight and improve in several areas. The turnovers are still a problem, but that can be fixed as the Bulldogs continue to work hard preparing for their district opener at Harmony October 9.

I thought the defense did an outstanding job, as did the offensive line when the running game started to click. The final score was 35-6 after Rains held a 28-0 lead at intermission. Cameron Peek really looks tough running the ball no matter what position he is playing. On one run I saw nine Rains Wildcats in on tackling rugged running back Andres Guiterrez. The big man is hard to stop.

The Bulldogs will have success if they can control the ball on offense early in the games. They are hard to stop once the ground game gets going. Rains had good field position most of the night and the Bulldogs defense battled them toe to toe. Take away an errant snap on a punt which gave Rains a score, and a fumble return deep to Quitman territory as the Bulldogs were driving to score, and the game could have been much different.

Mineola and White Oak are headed for a district showdown when district opens October 9. Both teams are 4-0 and playing extremely well. Last year's game was decided by a Mineola field goal. It should be a barn burner.

The Alba-Golden Panthers are sitting at 4-0 using a strong defense to carry them each game. The Panthers are going to miss senior quarterback and leader Dylan Harle who broke his leg in the 19-0 win over Boles. The Panther defense has been stingy each game giving up just 15 total points in four contests.

The Lady Bulldogs started district play with a bang beating Harmony before losing to defending district champ Alba- Golden last Friday on the road. Coach Ashlee Lingo's girls have continued to improve throughout the season and the younger players are beginning to play like veterans.

Cammie Hicks has already proven to be one of East Texas' top setters with Molly Tanner, Kaci Raley, Dawn Houck and Macy Wilson proving they can play with the best on the front line. Freshman Madalyn Spears has proven she can play at the varsity level while Shelby Smith, Madison Haggerty, and Heather Deer have each contributed to the team success. The key to this year's Lady Bulldogs has been their ability to work together as a team to overcome any adversity they face.

The Lady Bulldogs head to Edgewood Tuesday and will be at home in a big match against county rival Mineola this Friday.

In college football SMU made number three ranked TCU earn their 56-37 victory. When the Mustangs get around to playing in conference, I believe you will start counting games in the win column.

The Aggies carved up Nevada 44-27, while Texas missed a PAT kick to fall 45-44 to California after new quarterback Jerrod Heard passed for 364 yards and ran for another 163 yards on 24 carries. Oklahoma outlasted Tulsa 52-38 in the state rivalry game. Whitehouse alumni Patrick Mahomes led Texas Tech to a great 35-24 win over Arkansas.

In the SEC, LSU toppled Auburn 45-21 and Ole Miss took it to second d ranked Alabama winning on the road 43-37. Number one Ohio State looked pretty bad in barely getting by Northern Illinois 20-13.

Texas A&M Commerce moved their record to 2-1 dominating the fourth quarter and defeating Texas A&M Kingsville 37-17.
