Westberry throws one-hit shutout against Quitman
The Lady Jackets’ Anna Westberry hurled a spectacular one-hit game March 14 in a 10-0 victory over Quitman. The tall left-hander struck out the side three times while going 2 for 3 at the plate, including a sixth-inning triple.
Mineola chalked up 13 base hits, with Lauren Simmons going 3 for 5 on the night.
Emily Wiley’s opening game plate appearance was indicative of the game. She recorded an infield hit by beating out the throw, advanced on an error, stole third base and eventually scored. The Lady Jackets played aggressive softball from the start and put up three runs in the first.
Mineola scored three runs in the third inning with a single, single, double sequence from Simmons, Isabella Tresca and Westberry. They repeated in the sixth with a single, single, triple sequence from Sophia Lopez, Simmons and Westberry.
Claudia Barriga spelled Westberry in the sixth and seventh. She retired the Lady Bulldogs in order in the sixth and faced four hitters in the seventh.
