Whitehurst hits 25 as Quitman runs past Boles
Quitman’s Maddy Whitehurst put together a career night pouring in a game high 25 points and five rebounds leading the Lady Bulldogs past Boles 53-39 at Ballard Gym last Tuesday.
Whitehurst made 82 percent of her shots going seven of nine on two point shots, hit both three-pointers she tried and made five of seven free throws.
She stepped up in the absence of post Ava Burroughs who suffered a concussion against North Hopkins and was being held out of the game.
Quitman senior Julia Simpson also had a good night hauling in 10 rebounds, scoring seven points and playing stellar defense. Sophomore Reiny Luman and junior Kynlie Love each added six points with Lindsay Hornaday scoring five and Carley Spears four.
“As a team, that was our best game from start to finish. We aren’t anywhere near where we need to be, but we are definitely improving and are getting better each game and that means we are moving in the right direction,” noted Head Coach Blake Hamrick.
Quitman got the scoring started with Simpkins and Luman to take a 4-0 lead. Boles tied the score at 4-4, but the Lady Hornets never led. A triple by Hornaday gave Quitman a 7-4 lead and a Simpkins score at the buzzer to end the first quarter left the Lady Bulldogs with an 11-8 lead.
In the second quarter a successful Whitehurst trey gave Quitman an 18-13 lead. Spears hit a shot as time ran down to give Quitman a 22-17 lead at the half. Quitman ran past Boles in the second half with a 31-22 advantage.
In the third quarter Whitehurst shot for nine of her 25 points and Spears hit a bucket at the buzzer on a beautiful pass from Luman giving Quitman a 35-27 edge going into the final quarter.
Quitman was set to play their final pre-district game at Commerce this Friday the Lady Bulldogs host Lone Oak Dec. 17 in the District 12-3A opener.
