Win column remains elusive as Quitman falls 40-14 to Arp

The Quitman Bulldogs fell victim to previously winless Arp 40-14 to open District 9-3A DII play at Bud Moody Field Friday night.

The Bulldog ground game was on task with Bulldog running back Wyatt Hightower, who bulled his way for 103 yards on 22 carries, and Gavin Oakes who ran for 73 yards on 12 totes.

Quitman fell behind 12-0 in the first quarter of action as Arp scored on an 18-yard run and a 12-yard run. The Tigers’ Kadaylon Williams was a dent in Quitman’s defensive armor all night long as he rushed for 213 yards on 13 carries. William’s fourth quarter 83-yard burst for a TD with just under eight minutes left in the game put the score at 40-14 and put the game out of reach just as Quitman had come alive on offense.

Quitman got its first score after falling behind 20-0 on a 25-yard Oakes to Ty Holland pass play. The point after failed but the Bulldogs had pulled to within 20-6 with 5:13 to go in the first half.

Arp was able to push across a score on a short run to go up 26-6 at intermission. The half ended with the  Bulldogs driving into Tiger territory, but an incomplete pass on fourth and ten ended Quitman’s hopes until the second half.

After a superb Quitman Proud Blue Band classic rock halftime show, a determined Bulldog team returned for the second half.

Arp took the second half kick-off and drove 85 yards in eight plays to the Quitman two-yard line, but it was there the Bulldog defense forced a fumble out of the end zone to take over the pigskin on their own 20-yard line after the touchback.

Arp held the Bulldogs and then disaster struck as Arp returned the punt 63 yards for a score to take a commanding 32-6 lead with 7:10 left in the third stanza. The Bulldogs were unable to move on offense and then held Arp on a fourth down stop to take over on their own 38-yard stripe.

Quitman dominated the first part of the final quarter, driving to the Arp 12 where they turned the ball over. After gaining three yards on their first play, Williams busted loose on the 83-yard scamper making it 40-6.

Quitman never stopped fighting and came back to score on a Hightower three-yard run with 5:37 to go. Hightower also added the two-point conversion making the final tally of 40-14.

This week, Quitman travels to Winona where they will face a Wildcat team smarting from a frantic Grand Saline comeback which saw the Indians come from over 20 points down to win 36-32 on a late score. In other district action, pre-season favorite West Rusk took out Troup 43-20. Harmony did not play.
