Host team finishes third
Behind a superb outing by freshman Ben Burroughs, the Quitman Bulldogs took home third place honors in the Quitman Fellowship of Christian Athletes annual tournament. The Bulldogs defeated Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill 5-2 in a game which Burroughs gave up just four hits and struck out five Red Devil batters.
Burroughs got the backing on offense by A.J. Dunn and Jake Farmer who each had a single, an RBI and a run scored as well as fellow freshman Trey Berry who hit for a pair of singles with an RBI and a run scored.
It was the Bulldogs second game of the day as the tournament’s final two rounds were all played Friday, due to the concern for incoming weather Saturday. The win over Chapel Hill boosted the young Bulldog squad to 5-4 on the season and Burroughs to 3-0 on the year.
“I am just so proud of these young men and the effort they given me every time they hit the field,” Coach Hayland Hardy said.
In the opening game of the tournament Dunn was rock solid from the mound striking out 10 Winona Wildcats on the way to an 8-3 Quitman victory. Dunn added a single and an RBI to help his own cause. Catcher Ty Moss helped his pitcher going 2-2 with three RBI and a run scored. Farmer added a single, an RBI and three stolen bases. Dawson Hudman came through with a single and two RBI while Greg Tolle added two singles and a run scored. Burroughs had a single and scored two runs with Berry getting a single and a run.
In Friday’s first game Quitman fell in the semi-final to Mt. Vernon 4-0. The Bulldogs got doubles from Hudman and Farmer with Dunn adding a single for the only hits in the game. Mt. Vernon had five hits in the game.
