Lady Jackets rout Kemp but fall to Scurry-Rosser

After dropping two games the week before, the Mineola Lady Jackets found that winning feeling again last Tuesday in a 72-27 rout of Kemp. Unfortunately the Lady Jackets could not convert the second game of the week into a district victory and lost 54-40 Friday night against Scurry-Rosser.

The Lady Jackets made for a quick game last Tuesday night at Kemp. Mineola took a 27-4 lead after the first period and extended that lead to a 39 points at halftime. It was more of the same in the second half as Mineola kept the pressure on Kemp and cruised to the 45-point victory.

Bri McCalla was the leading scorer for the game with 22 points. Mineola had three other players in double figures with Sabria Dean and Jessiah Riley scoring 12 points each and Alyssa Cannon adding 10 points.

Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Jackets were Vanessa Spurgeon with five points, Kelsey Brewington with four points, Cyndi Butler with three points and Lauren Almuete and Meghan Brewington with two points apiece.

Mineola found themselves in a fight early against Scurry-Rosser but a 17-9 second-period run by the Lady Cats tipped the scales in their favor. After trailing by four points at the end of the first period, Mineola could not stop the Lady Cats who extended the lead to 12 points at halftime. Scurry-Rosser managed to outscore the Lady Jackets in the second half by two points and secured the 54-40 win over Mineola.

Riley and Dean led the way for the Lady Jackets with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Almuete contributed seven points and rounding out the scoring were McCalla, Butler and Taylor Griffin with three points apiece and (Kelsey) Brewington with two points.

Mineola is sitting outside the playoff picture with three games remaining in the regular season but can make a push to the postseason. The Lady Jackets will need to win each of those games and get a little help from other teams around the district.

The Lady Jackets (18-11, 4-7) traveled to Edgewood Tuesday, after Monitor press time, and host Eustace Friday for Senior Night. Mineola will finish the regular season at Quitman (4-21, 1-10) on Tuesday. Mineola is 2-1 against their remaining opponents.
