The frantic pace of the Triple A Stallions finally wore down a fighting and hustling Mineola team in last Tuesday’s bi-district game at Crandall High School finally pulling away from the Yellowjackets in a 53-34 win.

Both teams fought hard defensively in the first quarter with the Yellowjackets battling the speedy and quick Stallions toe to toe. The quarter ended with charter school hanging on to a slim 9-8 advantage. The Stallions outstanding sophomore guard Deauante Lee, who led all scoring with 22 points, hit the first bucket, on long three-point shot followed by an steal and lay-up by Ladarrius Johnson to give Triple A an early 5-0 lead. But the ‘Jackets came storming back on shots by Kourtland Sinches and Kadavion George to make it a 5-4 game midway through the quarter. Down 7-4, Mineola got buckets from Cameron Sorenson and Sean Dennis to take their first lead with 1:55 to go in the quarter. Lee hit a jumper to close out the quarter with the Stallions leading 9-8.

Midway through the second period, Sinches stole a pass and raced to the bucket, pulling up for a 10 foot jump shot at 4:10 left in the half to cut the Stallion lead to 14-12. Sorenson hit a free throw at the 3:45 mark left in the half. The Stallions then went on a 10-0 run with Tryrique Marks hitting back to back treys to put Triple A up 25-13. Lee would hit two charity tosses at the 1:09 mark and Sinches came back to hit a 15 foot jump shot ending the first half with Mineola down 27-15.

Triple A’s Lee started the second half with a three point shot from the left corner to put the Stallions up 30-15. Lee would hit another trey in the middle of the quarter and added another at the buzzer to end the third quarter and put the Stallions ahead 43-24. Mineola’s Sorenson answered Lee with a pair of three-pointers in the quarter, but the ‘Jackets were outscored 16-9 in the period.

Mineola fought gamely in the final quarter with Sorenson hitting 8-10 free throws, but they could not corral the Stallions, who were runner-up to Madison, the state’s number one team, from district 11-3A. Triple A will move on to the area round of the playoffs.

Sorenson led Mineola with 16 points followed by Sinches who had 10, Sean Dennis with three, George and Shaw Franklin two each and Frankie Meason with one point.

Mineola was the third place team in District 12-3A with a fine 10-4 slate in district. The Yellowjackets end their season with a 13-11 record. Triple A is now 22-11 for the year after finishing second in District 11-3A with a 12-2 record as they continue in the playoffs.
