After suffering three losses to start district play, the Yantis Lady Owls have hit their stride winning their last four games and sit at 4-3 going into their final district match with Avinger. The Lady Owls disposed of Union Hill 43-27 Friday night after losing to them previously. Yantis is now primed to make a playoff run.
Yantis’ Ashton Burnett hit a trey with 3:01 to go in the first quarter to give Yantis a 6-1 lead, but Union Hill fought back and hit a trey at the 1:02 mark to give the Lady Bulldogs a 7-6 lead. Burnett came back and hit three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt to make it a 9-7 lead for Yantis after one quarter. Burnett scored seven of Yantis’ nine first-quarter points.
Montana Wetzel and Maggie Hooker took over in the second quarter on offense. Wetzel hit for 10 points while Maggie Hooker had six points as Maddie Hooker cleared the boards on both ends of the floor with her rebounding. Yantis went into intermission with a 25-12 lead.
With Yantis leading 29-12, Wetzel hit a long range triple giving the Lady Owls a commanding 32-12 lead with 3:50 to go in the third stanza. The fourth quarter found the Lady Owls going to the free throw line for each of their nine points in the quarter. They hit on 9-16 from the charity stripe in the final eight minutes.
Wetzel was on fire finishing with 20 points while Burnett pitched in 11 with Maggie Hooker hitting for eight points.
The Lady Owls are hoping for a big win and trip back to the playoffs.
