Yantis seeks $274,000 wastewater grant
Yantis City Council on Feb. 11 authorized the submission of an application for a Texas Community Development Block Grant to fund city wastewater improvements.
If approved, the grant will provide $274,131, and the city will commit to spending $13,750 for the project.
Mayor Trey Norris will act as the city’s executive officer and authorized representative for all matters pertaining to the application and committing local match.
Also at the meeting, council heard a presentation from Honor and Remember Inc., an organization dedicated to the recognition of military fallen heroes and their families. The group creates an “Honor and Remember Flag” for fallen military personnel and an “Honor and Sacrifice Flag” for fallen first-responders.
A proposal to accept these flags as the City of Yantis’ way of recognizing the service of fallen military and first responders was approved.
An order to call for the City of Yantis election for May 4 was approved. Norris and Aldermen Bruce Sumner and Corey Ogle are up for election this year.
Debbie Rhodes presented an update on the Northeast Texas Prairie Classroom, discussing the design of a six-acre park, which was donated by Julie Mattox, for prairie land preservation. There are plans for birdhouses, prairie grass and trails to be a part of the land. Local students created designs for the park to be voted on by the city council and community members.
Rhodes said she has applied for a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grant for funding, and she is looking into other opportunities.
The council discussed the need for cleaning up 103 N. Main St. Norris told the council that he intends to visit with the person overseeing the building to discuss improvements.
Jeff Quinn gave the Yantis Volunteer Fire Department report for January. Yantis third-graders visited the Fire Department. He mentioned how YVFD is working to register with the Full Service System for Award Management (SAM), which is the system used for choosing how grants are distributed.
Water Superintendent David Freeman discussed how the water department is working to make sure meters are accurate.
