The Yantis Lady Owls continued their hot streak with the fifth consecutive district win while securing a playoff spot with a 41-24 win at Avinger last Tuesday.
Yantis was set to play Fannindel in Commerce for bi-district at 7:30 p.m. Monday night at press time. The Lady Owls beat Fannindel 45-35 in a December pre-season contest.
The win over Avinger gave the Lady Owls the second place seeding for the playoffs. Ashton Burnett had the hot hand for Yantis at Avinger with 15 points. In the team effort, Maggie Hooker scored nine points, Montana Wetzel added eight, Sydney Williams seven and Maddie Hooker two.
Wetzel played her consistently solid floor game on both ends of the floor while the Hooker twins took care of the boards dominating in the rebounding segment of the game. Williams’ hustle was a constant threat on defense for Yantis and Burnett added numerous steals to thwart the Lady Indians.
The win gave the Lady Owls a district slate of 5-3 and 14-13 on the year.
Yantis boys 51 Avinger 42
It was a basketball game played without any introductions, cheerleaders and fans. Behind the offensive punch of Bradley Potts, the Yantis Owls beat Avinger 51-42 on the road.
The game was played to an empty gym because of a ruling handed down by University Interscholastic League officials Monday.
A brawl at the end of the Jan. 19 Yantis and Avinger contest resulted in the suspension of players on both teams and was played in front of officials and school administrators only. The boys game was played first, followed by the girls contest which was open to the public.
With the win, the Owls are one win away from securing their second consecutive district crown after an undefeated district slate and trip to the region semi-finals last season where they fell to eventual state champion Lipan.
Potts, who has been hampered by a knee injury, put the team on his back scoring 26 points. He got double-digit scoring help from Will Graham who had 11 points and Dallas Scott who hit for 10. Tucker Hathcoat and Josh Moreland each had two points.
