City secretary resigns, sidewalk study approved
Quitman City Secretary Brian Andrews resigned his post effective February 19. Andrews had been at the job with the city for nearly two years and he has accepted a job in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
“Tonight ends an era. Brian Andrews is leaving us for better and greener pastures in the metroplex. This is his last night here,” Mayor J.R. Evans said. “I’m going to personally miss Brian and I want to take this opportunity to honor him. I appreciate the work you have done for the city, for me, and I wish you well on your next endeavor.”
In other action, Quitman city council members approved a resolution hiring KSA Engineering to do a downtown sidewalk planning study at a cost of $23,500. The study for replacement and improvement of the sidewalks includes: 1) the north side to Lipscomb Street from N. Stephens Street to North Main Street, along the west side of N. Main Street from Lipscomb Street to McKnight Street; along the east side of N. Stephens Street from Lipscomb Street to McKnight Street; 2) the east side of N. Main street from McKnight Street , to Lipscomb Street, to East Goode Street, the north side of E. Goode Street to Hart Street; 3) the east side of Main Street from E. Goode Street to Bermuda Street; 4) the south side of Bermuda Street from Stephens Street to Main Street.
The planning study includes evaluating the use of buildings on the north side of Lipscomb Street (Ramsey and old Wood County Democrat buildings) currently owned by Quitman Development Corporation (QDC). They will look at a passageway between Lipscomb Street and the city owned lot north of the buildings, and the use of the QDC owned lot for additional parking off the courthouse square.
The study will further include the evaluation of eliminating existing parking at the center of Lipscomb Street between the QDC buildings and the courthouse and bumping out the sidewalk to provide pedestrian and convenience areas for tables and seating. The study will also include evaluating current ADA (American Disabilities Act) access and options for improving ADA access at business entrances.
