Young pedestrian struck, injured on Quitman road
A 10-year-old boy from Ore City was struck by an 18-wheeler in Quitman on S. Main St. (Hwy. 37) as he tried to cross from Red Bud Lane in the area of Iron Man Garage.
The truck was traveling north on Main when the accident occurred.
According to Quitman Police Chief John Farmer, the victim was with a group of boys when he darted into the path of the truck around 5:30 p.m. Monday.
The boy was taken by an ambulance to UT Health Quitman and flown to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.
Farmer said the boy was able to converse with the emergency response team. Farmer added that as of Tuesday morning the boy was in stable condition and in ICU at Children’s Medical Center.
“In my opinion, the truck driver did all he could do to avoid the accident, but it happened so fast when the boy darted out in front of him,” Farmer said. “The truck driver was pretty shook up. I guess the boy never looked his way before he darted across the road.”
Traffic was backed up for miles while Quitman police investigated, and the scene had been cleared by 7:30 p.m.
