Youth can snag trout

Posted

Area youth can cast a line for rainbow trout at the Mineola Nature Preserve Saturday, Feb. 6 from 9 a.m.-noon at no charge.

The annual kid fish event also does not require a fishing license.

The trout will be stocked at Bridge Bob Pond by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept.

Recommended tackle includes a stringer or small cooler, as successful fishermen may keep their catches.

A light-action rod-and-reel combination with small hooks, light line (12 pounds or less), small bobbers and small split shot is a good starter kit. Recommended bait includes salmon eggs, whole kernel corn, marshmallows, small worms and prepared trout baits. Rooster tails, Berkley power bait and small spinners are good artificial baits.

Volunteers and TPWD staff will be on hand to help with loaner rods and reels and bait for those without gear.

Youth may be accompanied by an adult mentor, who also does not require a license for this event.

There is no fee to enter the preserve, on Wood County Road 2724 just south of Mineola.
