The 25th annual Wood County Fire Chiefs Association Fire/Rescue School is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14. Firefighters from all over the county are invited to participate.

The day will begin with a special remembrance ceremony in honor of the first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11. The ceremony will take place at 8:10 a.m. at the Quitman Fire Station, and the public is invited to attend.

From 8:30 to 10:00 a.m., the firefighters will learn about conduct and safety in helicopter landing zones. From 10:00 a.m. to noon, they will study tactical strategy during structure fires and firefighter survival skills. From noon to 1:00 p.m., the firefighters will be treated to a lunch at Quitman Fire Station.

From 1:00 p.m. to 5:30, the firefighters will train with ropes, knots and rappelling. Boots, helmets and gloves are required. This class will contain 25 firefighters only, with a limit on two firefighters from each department. During the same time, they will take training related to car fires, ventilation and sprinkler systems.

The fee for registration is $40, and the fee for late registration is $45. The tuition is eligible for a Texas Forest Service Refund, which must be requested before the start of school. Late registration takes place between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 14.

Checks must be made payable to the Wood County Fire Chief's Association. Students must be 18 years or older to attend. Short pants, sleeveless shirts or sandals are not allowed during the training sessions. For more information, contact the Quitman Volunteer Fire Department at 903-763-2221.
