The 13th annual Mineola Kiwanis Chili Cook off is scheduled Saturday, Feb. 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mineola Civic Center.
This will be the second year featuring the First Responders Challenge.

Mineola council approves spending COVID money
The Mineola City Council approved spending almost $1.2 million from the federal American Rescue Plan Monday.
The city has received half the funds, about $590,000, and has two years to encumber the money approved by Congress for COVID-19 relief. It must be spent within four years. more

Quitman council OK’s project funds
The Quitman City Council approved a Quitman Development Corporation request for $25,000 to go toward Phase One in the efforts of UT Health Quitman to locate a memory care center for the treatment of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

District attorney, county judge candidates outline campaign issues
A forum featuring Wood County judge and the district attorney candidates was held at the Yantis Community Center last Thursday night. A crowd of 30 people were on hand to hear from the candidates and submit questions to moderator Jim Rogers.

Alba-Golden ISD committee proposes $16 million bond
The Alba-Golden Facilities Improvement Committee recommended a $17 million construction project to the school board Monday.
The board plans to take up the recommendation at the February meeting for a possible bond election in May.
The committee recommended a $16 million bond with $1 million coming from district reserves. more

Funds target innovative Quitman memory care center
The Wood County Economic Development Commission (WCEDC) unanimously approved $50,000 last Wednesday in support of Phase One of an innovative memory care concept project in Quitman.
The Wood County Central Hospital District matched that grant with $50,000, and the Quitman Economic Development Corporation committed $25,000 which was approved by the Quitman City Council last Thursday. more
