A heart-breaker in overtime

In the battle for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 15-2A, Quinlan Boles managed to escape with an overtime win at Alba-Golden Friday to make things interesting.

Heading into the final week of action, the hometown Panthers stood at 3-5 while Boles was at 2-6.

Alba-Golden had a tall order to get one more win and secure the playoff spot, with games against Como-Pickton, which defeated the Panthers 50-47 on Jan. 22, and ending the regular season Friday against North Hopkins, which has not lost a district game.

Boles played winless Cumby on Tuesday and ends the year against Como-Pickton, a team they lost to 52-19 on Jan. 26.

The Panthers trailed early but built a lead that stood at 38-31 entering the fourth quarter.

It quickly slipped away on nine straight points by Boles, and the two teams battled down the stretch, exchanging the lead four times.

The Panthers pulled ahead 52-50 on a steal and lay up by Will Hartin and then got the ball back after a Boles miss when Boedy Baker blocked the shot.

Trying to run out the final seconds and avoid getting fouled, the Panthers had a pass picked off which resulted in a put back by Boles to send the game to overtime, after the Panthers missed a chance to win it at the free throw line.

The Panthers could not find the basket in the extra four minutes, despite several close-in looks.

Neither team scored until a Boles basket with 1:43 to play.

Alba-Golden converted two free throws for their only scores of the extra period and fell 59-54.
