Adulting program offered to AGHS seniors

There were a lot of snaps and cracks and groans in the distance learning room at Alba-Golden High School last Friday, as the class of 2023 tried some yoga under the direction of local yoga instructor Lisa Carter. It was just one of four stops on the morning, as the seniors participated in a community-led Adulting 101 program.

Joining Carter in bringing some thoughtful and practical recommendations to the soon-to-be graduates were Lee Hall and Jarrod Bryant (automotive maintenance), Stephanie Beverly and Samantha Culver (planning meals and food budgeting) and Deborah Perry (interviewing skills and dressing for success).

As Alba-Golden High School Principal Brittany Hall explained, the Adulting 101 morning was simply a way to highlight some basic life skills which will soon become very important to the students. She highlighted that the endeavor was community-led.

“This is our first such event,” Hall explained, “but we hope to expand it in the future.”

The various stations visited by the seniors were indeed all practical and hands-on. As Carter introduced the benefits of yoga – “flexibility, balance and strength” – each student sat on a yoga mat and joined the instruction.

Parked in Panther Alley was a game warden truck where Wardens Hall and Bryant were talking about tire pressure and preparing for a road trip. Some seniors had their first experience with a tire gauge.

While mini-fruit pies baked in the kitchen, Beverly, the proprietor of Creative Charcuterie, was leading a discussion about buying pasta, and just how far that pasta will go for a family meal.

Just down the hallway in the Senior Seminar classroom, Perry had produced some excellent boards illustrating examples of dressing for job interviews. She related a number of personal anecdotes from her professional experience

She commented that most of the information presented had already been addressed by Coach Boerger in the senior seminar, but that often hearing from outside sources can often help communicate the message.

There are 38 seniors in the Alba-Golden class of 2023, with four additional classmates graduating early.
