Alba council approves purchase of Tasers
Alba City Council voted to spend $3,575 Monday to equip its four police officers with Tasers.
Police Chief Juan Ramirez said that officers are having to deal with more violent individuals, and use-of-force incidents have been increasing.
“We have just been lucky through the years that nobody’s gotten hurt,” he said.
The chief added that he has never had to use a Taser in his law enforcement career.
He studied other forms of non-lethal weapons and decided Tasers would be best.
The units are refurbished and come with the same warranty as new units. Holsters and reloads are included with the purchase.
Wood County will train the officers at no expense to the city.
Ramirez also discussed his efforts to improve radio communications for the department. He questioned the city attorney whether the city could accept donations and solicit funds.
Attorney Jim McElroy said general law cities can accept such donations, and they are tax deductible.
The council also approved the use of the square for a tent revival by Second Chance Ministry on Saturday, June 17, with proceeds going to the police and fire departments.
