Alba-Golden falls to Cumby in straight sets
The Cumby Lady Trojans used an oppressive offense to stifle any Alba-Golden scoring efforts en route to a straight-set victory last Tuesday.
The Lady Trojan offensive performance featured such good floor placement and velocity that it forced the Lady Panthers to focus practically all their efforts on generating returns. This left little room in the match for Alba-Golden’s offense to make an impact.
Tellingly, despite committing more unforced errors in the first set than the Lady Panthers, the Lady Trojan’s serving and striking abilities built a quick lead. Using 14 offensive scores – Alba-Golden managed only four – they steadily increased the lead throughout the set and secured a 25-17 win.
The offensive pressure continued unabated in the second set. Cumby rattled off 17 offensive scores, taking the set 25-4.
The Lady Panthers were stunned. They were able to vent some of their collective frustration in the third set. Skylar West started the set with a strong block at the net. Kaylee Anglin generated back-to-back aces with blistering serves.
An additional kill by Anglin, an ace from Kalli Trimble, a drop shot from Cacie Lennon and a kill from Erin Langston were not enough to counter the 14 offensive points scored by Cumby in the third set. The Lady Panthers fell in the set 25-15.
