Alba-Golden ISD committee proposes $16 million bond

The Alba-Golden Facilities Improvement Committee recommended a $17 million construction project to the school board Monday.

The board plans to take up the recommendation at the February meeting for a possible bond election in May.

The committee recommended a $16 million bond with $1 million coming from district reserves.

The bond would increase school property taxes by 31.65 cents per $100 valuation. The rate is now just under $1 and dropped almost nine cents last year.

H.C. Campbell said that the committee had reviewed the district financial standing and infrastructure needs, conducted visits to other districts with similar challenges, developed several building scenarios and costed each of those scenarios.

The committee concluded that Alba-Golden’s present facilities were inadequate due to safety, space and building code issues. The committee recommended construction of addition elementary school classrooms, construction of a multi-purpose competitive gymnasium and renovations to the agriculture-science CTE facility.

Board president Jason Stovall thanked the committee and took the recommendation for consideration.

The prospective bond would be the first issued by Alba-Golden school district since 2004.

Elementary school principal Kevin Wright advised that in January alone, the elementary school received 10 new students.

“People are finding Alba-Golden,” stated Wright. He reported a student population of 425 in the elementary school.

In other action the board unanimously accepted the resignation letter of Superintendent Cole McClendon, effective June 30. McClendon will be retiring from service as a full-time school administrator.

The board unanimously agreed to begin the search for a new superintendent through the Texas Association of School Boards service, in lieu of conducting the search for a new superintendent through the district office.

In further significant action, the board approved purchase of a 26.75-acre tract located near the school at 1276 County Road 2377 for $374,500.  Trustee Mike Ragsdale cast the sole dissenting vote.
