The contractor for Mineola ISD’s new primary campus will seek bids from subcontractors Feb. 14, Superintendent Cody Mize announced at Monday’s board meeting.

The campus is slated for NE Loop 564 at just under $20 million.

The school board also accepted bids for just under $98,000 for the purchase of new band uniforms and $129,280 for a new 77-passenger school bus.

The uniforms will be purchased from Fred J. Miller and will take about six months to arrive.

Band director Jim Best said the FJM design was the one the band staff liked best, and it also came in at the best cost and with extras such as garment bags.

They are replacing uniforms which are about 8-9 years old, the standard life of a band uniform.

The bid includes 175 uniforms, to allow for variances in sizes from year to year.

The band has 102 members and is projected to grow to around 130 before leveling off, Best said.

The new school bus is expected to take about 9-12 months to deliver, which is down from a high of 18 months in prior years.

Trustees also reviewed various grants the district is seeking or has received for safety features, such as silent panic alert technology for teachers and a mobile phone app for emergency communications.

The state is offering $200,000 grants that focus on safety fencing and safety glass to protect campuses.
