Brahmas stop Panthers to gain playoff spot

Posted

The Paul Pewitt Brahmas came to Panther Stadium last Friday and dealt the Alba-Golden Panthers an overwhelming 45-13 defeat.

The Brahmas did it with aggressive, unrelenting defense and over 500 yards of offense.

The Panthers were primed for this game and took the opening possession 59 yards down to the Brahmas’ 1-yard line. Alba-Golden churned out the yardage on the ground, largely behind the tough running of Cameron Lennon.

On a fourth-and-goal from just shy of the goal-line, the Brahams middle linebacker shot the play-side gap and stoned the fourth-down running attempt. Paul Pewitt took over on downs.

As with every game, an early turn of play can have significant impact on the course of the whole game. So was the case Friday.

The Brahmas promptly marched 96 yards to open the scoring. The touchdown came after a Brahmas fumble in the backfield. The runner collected the ball and sprinted back through the collapsing defense for an 18-yard score.

At the quarter break, the score stood 8-0, Paul Pewitt.

The Brahmas generated another long drive to take a 15-0 lead with 5:13 left in the half.

The closing minute of the half was filled with excitement. Wyatt Sutton made a great break on a Brahmas pass intended as a wide receiver screen, intercepting in stride. Alba-Golden was in business in Brahmas territory.

Two plays later, the ball was stripped from the Panthers and scooped by Paul Pewitt which advanced it to just shy of the Panther’s goal-line.

The visitors pushed the ball in on the next snap and took a 21-0 lead into the half.

Alba-Golden’s hopes for taking control in the second half were dashed by the Brahmas. The visitors struck quickly using a 49-yard run on a fake reverse. The quick score made it 27-0 and created a margin too much to overcome.

Cameron Lennon returned the ensuing kick-off to near midfield and Alba-Golden put together its second significant drive of the game. They moved to the Brahmas 7-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.

The Panthers forced a Brahams fumble on the next series and had a second chance at the end zone. Lennon connected with Boogie Trimble on an out-route which put the ball on the 1-yard line. The Panthers scored on an offensive push.

Desperate to get the ball back, the Panthers defense began to tackle the ball (not the runner) and gave up a long scoring run. The score stood 33-6 with only a quarter and a half left to play.

The Brahmas managed two more scores – one on a time-killing 13-play drive – and the game went into the books.

The Panthers did put together yet one more scoring drive which featured a 13-yard carry by Lennon and a nice pass completion from Sam Olson to Sutton.

The loss eliminated the Panthers from playoff contention. They finish the season Friday at Boles. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
