Buffaloes run away from Bulldogs
On Friday night, the Quitman Bulldogs took on the Lone Oak Buffaloes in their fourth district game of the season, but the Bulldogs fell short in a 41-21 loss.
Lone Oak won the opening coin toss and chose to receive the ball, but on their second down, Bryce Miller, No. 62, gave Quitman an early spark by intercepting a pass. However, the Bulldogs couldn’t convert the turnover into points, and after a stalled drive, Lone Oak took full advantage. The Buffaloes quickly responded with a touchdown drive and an extra point, grabbing a 7-0 lead.
Quitman’s offense struggled to find momentum, forcing them to punt. Lone Oak kept up the pressure, moving the ball effectively and scoring another touchdown to close out the first quarter ahead 14-0. The Bulldogs’ defense showed resilience, but the offense couldn’t keep pace, ending the first half still scoreless after multiple turnovers on both sides.
Starting the second half with the ball, Quitman finally found a breakthrough. Quarterback Klayton Meadows connected with wide receiver Bryson Hobbs for a 60-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 14-6. But Lone Oak immediately answered, driving downfield for another touchdown and missing the extra point to keep the score at 20-6.
Lone Oak’s offense continued to dominate, recovering a fumble after a Quitman miscue and turning it into another touchdown, widening the lead to 27-6. The Buffaloes then added yet another two touchdowns, pushing their advantage to 4-6.
Late in the second half, Quitman showed some fight. The Bulldogs fought for a 70-yard drive and Meadows punched into the endzone from two yards out, followed by a two-point conversion to make the score 41-14. On the next series, No. 99 Cade Papez recovered a fumble, setting up another touchdown pass from Meadows to Hobbs. With the extra point, Quitman closed the deficit to 41-21.
Despite a late turnover and a final opportunity to add more points, Quitman ran out of time as the Buffaloes’ early lead proved too much to overcome.
The Bulldogs will aim to regroup and come back stronger in their next district matchup.
They travel to Prairiland Friday night.
