The Quitman boys powerlifting team won its first regional championship Friday at Arp in Class 3A and is sending four lifters to the state finals.

Carlos Flores took first place in the 114-pound class and set several records. He set a regional record in squat (405 lbs.), deadlift (385 lbs.) and his 1,040 lb. total in three lifts was also a regional record.

In the same class Jayden Markham took second place and qualified for state. Ryan Widemon qualified for state coming in second in the 132 lb. class. Johnata Jones took first place in the 242 lb. class to move on to state.

Markham had lifts of 345, 190 and 355 pounds for an 890 total.

Widemon totaled 1,010 pounds with lifts of 380, 225 and 405 pounds.

Jones lifted 1,595 pounds with 630 in the squat, 400 bench press and 565 dead lift.

Other team members on the regional winning team were Bryce Miller, Cain Ingram and Hayden Batchelder.

Miller was 5th in the 114 class with 685 pounds, Ingram 6th in the 132 class with 895 pounds and Batchelder 7th in the 242 class with 1,400 pounds.

Athletic Director Shane Webber  said, “I am super proud of these young men who make the decision to get up and workout at 6 a.m. three days a week and still commit to our off season workouts in the afternoon. Every one of these young men has become three-sport athletes to help Quitman in all phases. This regional championship is a direct reflection of Coach Kyle Kern and Coach Eric Shaw who instill the team mentality and mindset that we all work together for the good of Quitman athletics. I could not be happier for them and our young men.”

The state meet will be in Abilene March 24.

Mineola had two competitors at the regional meet.

Parker Harris, 148 class, 9th place, 930 pounds, 355, 210, 365

Moses Medellin 181 class, 7th place, 1,300 pounds, 500, 350, 450

In the 2A meet, Alba-Golden’s Layton Williams placed fourth in the 275 class with 1,335 pounds.
