Camp helps student actors earn their chops
“That was cool!”
A student in the annual summer acting camp through the Lake Country Playhouse and the Historic Select Theater (“The Select”) has just learned how to perform stage fighting with homemade swords; and boy, is she loving it.
The camp, which was a 2-week course, aimed to teach students in-depth skills such as costuming, prop and set design and installation, directing, casting and even script editing.
Of course, they also learned expected skills such as acting, memorizing lines, etc.
The theater camp was taught by instructor Tiffany Whitten, whose goal was to have students be ready to advance into acting outside of summer camp.
“What I want to do is – since this is more of an advanced thing – is I want to have these kids really comfortable with auditions,” she said. “So when they start getting into community theater or high school drama, that they’re comfortable with auditions.”
Students ended the 2-week session with an hourlong “showcase” for friends, family and community members. The showcase included a stage fighting display, two short skits and a longer play.
