Canine Mata gains national recognition
Mata, who served as a law enforcement canine for Wood County Prec. 2 Constable Kelly Smith until his retirement Dec. 31, was honored in Washington D.C. last week by the Animals in War and Peace organization with the Distinguished Service Medal.
Smith and Mata traveled to the nation’s capital to receive the honor in the Rayburn House Office Building.
The group began the honors in 2019 and has honored 23 animals with the Medal of Bravery and 10 for distinguished service since 2022. Recipients have included two horses and three pigeons, as well as 28 dogs.
