A disagreement on how much of a raise to give city of Alba employees in the new budget should be resolved next week.

The city has to approve the 2022-23 budget by Sept. 20, and city council members ended a sometimes animated discussion about pay raises by agreeing to look at several proposals on the 20th.

Council member Tammy Kirkpatrick said she could not support a proposed eight percent increase.

She pointed out that the city has gone out of its way to help employees, including adding $146,000 to the retirement plan.

She said she has worked to get employees increases each year.

There are still city streets that need repairs, the city needs a new storm siren, and the council needs to make sure it can budget enough for some funds that had to be adjusted due to increased costs, she noted.

Council member Robert Kraemer, who supported eight percent, said the employees should have received a five percent raise last year.

The proposal does include an additional police officer position.
