Coalition asks school district to partner for art facility

Posted

Nathan Witt of the Flint and Steel Coalition continued making the rounds of public bodies, presenting the group’s primary project, A.R.T. House, to the Mineola school board Monday, July 19.

The facility would house a wide range of artistic endeavors for the community’s youth, and Witt asked the school board to be a partner on the project.

Specifically he requested that the board consider equipping the computer lab in the facility, which would be built in a building the city of Mineola recently acquired on Front St., opposite the train depot.

Witt said the computer lab would correlate with the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and help integrate CTE into the community.

The district’s digital media instructor helped design the lab.

By having Flint and Steel, which is seeking non-profit status, to operate the facility, it would open up additional grant possibilities.

Board President John Abbott said the district needs to explore whether such a project would fit within the Texas Education Agency’s funding requirement for CTE.

Todd Witt said that the coalition does not yet have all the answers but does have the direction it wants to see the program go.

Nathan Witt explained that by having A.R.T. House open after school and on weekends, students could continue working on projects outside school hours.

He explained plans to partner with Dallas Baptist University to have graduate students help over see the program.
