Commission sets common school program

The Wood County Historical Commission will present “The Common Schools of Wood County” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Quitman Public Library and hopes former students and those interested in Wood County history will attend.

There will be memorabilia and photos on display. Some former students and a teacher will speak and refreshments will be provided.

This era lasted from 1884 with 46 schools until the closing of the last one in 1965. Although they did not all exist at the same time, there were over 100 Wood County common schools.

The commission has completed 31 interviews representing 23 schools.

The commission continues to interview and photograph former students, especially of schools not represented.

Interested persons may email the commission at to set up an interview or share photos.
