Wood County Commissioners approved a $57,611 bid from Maddox Air Conditioning, Inc. of Tyler for replacing four existing gas/electric units with new Carrier units to bring back heat in the county jail.

The Maddox proposal came in almost $20,000 below the other bid from Wellborn Mechanical of Longview, $74,500. Some of the units are more than a decade old.

“The air was working all right, but the heat exchanges have gone bad,” Commissioner Russell Acker said. This problem was deemed an emergency situation and the vote from commissioners was unanimous. Commissioners Junior Holland, Mike Simmons, Acker and Judge Lucy Hebron were in attendance. Precinct 2 Commissioner Jerry Gaskill was unable to attend.

Maddox has been in business since 1937 and has done work for Wood County in the past. The bid includes two four-ton and two five-ton units and four curb adapters. Jail Administrator Louis Dahlman presented the bids to commissioners on behalf of the sheriff’s department.

Votes were canvassed and approved from the Nov. 8 mid-term elections. Election administrator Laura Wise presented the breakdown of voting.

She reported 18,259 voted of 32,709 registered voters in the county, with 7,329 votes on election day and more than 10,000 voting early.

She noted there were over 1,800 voting at branch locations in Wood County in Hawkins, Mineola and Winnsboro, around 600 votes at each branch location.

There was a 5% increase over the 2018 election and somewhat less than the 21,900 voters during the 2020 presidential election.
