Cooper defeats AG to stay in the lead
The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers hosted the district-leading Cooper Lady Bulldogs Friday. Vying to tie their record at 5–1 atop the league, The Lady Panthers succumbed to Cooper 61-51.
In a game of positioning, the Lady Bulldogs were simply in the right spot more often.
Cooper’s defensive pressure affected Alba-Golden, resulting in several consecutive turnovers, which the Lady Bulldogs converted into an early 6-2 lead.
Three-pointers by Kamrin Wright and Kalli Trimble kept the Lady Panthers in touch, closing the margin to one point each time.
The Lady Bulldog press continued to be effective in the second, punishing any pass that was not quite sharp enough, leading to a 10-0 run to start the second and a 34-19 halftime score.
The margin grew to as much as 25 in the third and Alba-Golden was able to shrink it only in the waning minutes of the contest.
It became obvious in those final moments why these two teams are atop their district – they are charged by their coaches to not stop giving their best effort, regardless of what the scoreboard says. If they momentarily forget, they will be reminded and respond accordingly.
If the rest of the season goes anything like the opening of district play, there could be quite a regular season finale to look forward to Feb. 7 in Cooper.
