Council approves housing addition

The Park Central subdivision off Old Tyler Highway in south Mineola will proceed with narrower lots after the Mineola City Council approved the replat of the property unanimously Monday.

The replat had previously failed on a 3-2 vote last month.

The council requested that the traffic enhancements, such as islands, be removed.

City Manager Mercy Rushing explained that the city does not want the additional responsibility of having to maintain the added features.

Developer Peter Woolford said he did not think that would be a deal breaker.

Woolford is developing the property and has a contract to deliver the lots to Conaway Homes.

The 83 homes will be constructed on 40 to 46-foot wide lots.

Two residents spoke in favor of the development.

Jim Herlocker with Mineola Community Bank said this is a good opportunity for economic development.

Builder Glenn Thurman said this project is what the future of affordable housing looks like.

Mineola needs it and the area needs it, he said.

The council approved a street closure for Oct. 7 for the Texas MG Register fall gathering.

Vic Savelli said the car club came to Mineola in 2014, and the city has been the most requested location for another event.

The four-day gathering is expected to draw 65-plus MG car owners. Commerce St. will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The May 6 city council election was called, with four positions on the ballot, mayor and three council positions.

A specific use permit was granted for an accessory structure at 817 Mimosa.

A replat was approved for the Mineola Memorial Library property at 1712 N. Pacific. It splits the site into two pieces, one with the house and the other with just over an acre of land.

A bid for $54,022 was awarded to Precision Fence for new fencing for the city water wells. The project is funded with American Rescue Plan money.

The council approved Traylor and Associates as contract manager for $38,000 for a street grant from the Texas Community Development Block Grant program.

The city previously applied for a grant in 2020 which was not awarded. Those construction prices would have to be modified.

Streets include sections of Newsome and Stone.

Ellen Brooke was approved as a new member of the Mineola Economic Development Corp.
