Five locally-contested Republican primary races will be on the ballot Tuesday, March 1 in Wood County – all featuring incumbents with one challenger.

Early voting continues through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the elections office near the county courthouse in Quitman.

County judge, DA races top primary voting March 1

Five locally-contested Republican primary races will be on the ballot Tuesday, March 1 in Wood County – all featuring incumbents with one challenger.

Early voting continues through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the elections office near the county courthouse in Quitman.

Election Day voting hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with voters casting ballots in their respective precincts.

County Judge Lucy Hebron and former Mineola mayor Kevin White face off for the second time. Hebron won the open seat in the 2018 election.

District Attorney Angela Albers is also seeking a second term after earning an appointment from Gov. Greg Abbott following the resignation of Jim Wheeler in 2018. Wheeler is seeking to return to the office.

Two incumbent county commissioners are seeking reelection, Jerry Gaskill in Prec. 2 and Russell Acker in Prec. 4. Attorney Sten Langsjoen is seeking the Prec. 2 seat while James Whitehurst of the Winnsboro public works department is running for the Prec. 4 seat.

All four justice of the peace positions are on the ballot, but only one is contested. Former Prec. 3 constable Gary Dixon has challenged incumbent Jerry Parker.

Incumbents Tony Gilbreath in Prec. 1 and Janae Holland in Prec. 2 are unopposed as is Jody Hectich in Prec. 4 to replace Cindy Weems, who did not run.

Other unopposed incumbents include County Clerk Kelley Price. Newly-appointed District Clerk Suzy Wright also has no opponent after Donna Huston resigned with a year left inher term. Daphne Carter is the lone candidate to replace retiring County Treasurer Becky Burford.

No Democratic candidates filed for any of the local races but did field candidates for statewide races and to face incumbent Congressman Lance Gooden, seeking a third term to represent Wood County. He does not have a primary challenger.

The Democrats are Kathleen Cordelia Bailey and Tartisha Hill.

State Sen. Bryan Hughes of Mineola is unopposed in the primary and also has no opponent in November.

State Rep. Cole Hefner is opposed by Dewey Collier in the primary, with no Democrat to face in November.

All of the major statewide races appear on the ballot.

As of Monday, 1,960 early votes had been cast in Wood County – 1,777 Republican and 183 Democrat.

The total includes 1,777 early votes – 1,676 Republican and 111 Democrat –  and 173 mail-ins.
