County judge recognizes first Good Samaritan award
Jeff Bain of Quitman has been honored by County Judge Lucy Hebron with the first Good Samaritan award.
The 74-year-old retiree met a young employee at a local grocery store who was in dire need of medical and dental surgery and had no resources or insurance.
Bain came up with a plan to help the person, which included finding the medical professionals who could do the surgery, the anticipated costs and other details.
He began sharing the story with everyone he knew and came in contact with, including friends, neighbors, his church and civic clubs, including the Quitman Rotary Club, where many were moved by the story, the need and the opportunity to help.
Bain took it upon himself to fill a need and raise the funds so that this person could get the medically necessary and life changing surgery. He has raised thousands over five months toward the $20,000 surgery.
“This award not only recognizes Jeff for his positive impact in our community but also recognizes the many others who do good in our community and inspires us all to do good,” Hebron said.
She noted that Jeff is probably like most Good Samaritans in that he doesn’t wish to be singled out for his good deeds and instead focus on needs in the community.
