Shoppers in Wood County added almost $8.4 million to government coffers during 2021 through sales taxes.

The final 2021 report from the state comptroller’s office shows every city in the county had gains in sales tax revenue for the year, along with Wood County, which also collects a half-cent tax on retail sales. The six cities each collect 1.5% on top of the state’s 6.25% tax.

Cities are rebated their shares monthly. The December report from the state reflects primarily sales made by merchants during October and reported to the state in November.

The December rebates for Hawkins, Mineola, Quitman and Yantis were larger than last December’s while Alba and Winnsboro income lagged.

But those two cities were still ahead for the 12-month period, as was the county.

Mineola brought in $220,531 in December for a 16.5% increase over December 2020 when $189,308 was received.

That brought the annual total to $2,614,521, breaking last year’s mark of $2,378,013 by almost 10%.

Quitman received a rebate of $69,399 for December, which barely eclipsed last year’s $68,920. For the year Quitman has received $887,906, up by 3.74% from 2020 when the income was $855,829.

Alba saw its December rebate fall by 8.7% to $20,636, a drop of almost $2,000. But for the year the city remained 11.64% ahead of 2020 with revenue of $268,364 compared to $240,621 last year.

Hawkins, the lone entity in the county that had lower income in 2020 than in 2019, surpassed both the past two years with revenues of $432,488 for a 28.5% jump over 2020.

Hawkins’ monthly rebate of $34,733 grew by 32% over December 2020.

Yantis saw its sales tax income rise 13.7% to $106,241 for the year, and for the month the city received $8,298 for a 13.2% improvement over December 2020.

Winnsboro’s December rebate of $131,015 fell by almost 20% from December 2020, but for the year the city remained ahead of 2020 with income of $1,511,311 for a 5.4% gain.

Totals for the seven entities show revenues in December of $704,181 compared to $675,861 in December a year ago.
