Members of the Elizabeth Denton English Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will present a public reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 4 at 10 a.m. at the Honeymoon Cottage in Jim Hogg City Park in Quitman.

This event, held in partnership with the city of Quitman and museum board, is part of the lead up to the 250th anniversary of America’s founding in 2026.

“The National Society DAR has been in the forefront of this momentous celebration by supporting chapters to bring awareness of the success of the ‘experiment in democracy’ our forefathers fought and died to create. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reflect on the past, celebrate the present and look toward the future. We honor the vision of the founders who believed in liberty, democracy and equal rights,” said Racheal Roberts, chapter regent.

Along with reading the Declaration, members are also celebrating the reopening of the Ima Hogg Museum. The museum has been partially restored to reflect Mrs. Hogg’s original vision when she donated the building to serve as a museum.

Museum Board Director Delene Allen and chapter members have worked tirelessly to help bring this restoration to life.

“We are hoping to open the Ima Hogg Museum to the public by October 2025 to mark the museum’s 55th year,” said Allen.
