DeGorostiza region XC champ
Quitman senior Katie DeGorostiza is leading the Lady Bulldogs cross country team to state.
DeGorostiza topped the field last week at the regional meet in Grand Prairie, taking the blue ribbon with a two-mile finish of 11 minutes 43.35 seconds.
While DeGorostiza’s time will make her competitive for the individual state 3A title, it was a strong performance from the whole Lady Bulldog team which sent them through to Austin.
Rounding out the Lady Bulldogs day were Braleigh Woods (12:10.09), McKenna Wood (12:31.18), Jadea Comenux (13:21.62), Christina Plata (13:41.36), Cooper Marcee (14:32.09) and Carley Plata (15:10.81).
The team will be joined in Austin by Mineola’s Olivia Hughes, who placed second with a time of 11:48.75, and teammate Raylie Peebles, who finished 13th in 12:28.88
Also qualifying for state was Bulldog Enrique Olvera, who raced to a 17:40.32 for 16th place in the 5,000 meters to record the best time for the Quitman boys squad.
The Mineola boys team top-finisher was Eddie Lucas who logged a 18:39.86.
At the 2A regional meet in Huntsville, headlines were made by the Hawkins girls team. They advanced to state with a third-place finish. Lady Hawk Kylie Adams ran the third fastest time with a 12:45.34. Other team members were Katie Barber, Jentri Evans, Amira Meeks, Katilyn Shelton and Addyson Turrentine.
Alba-Golden’s Brandt Peterson (19:27.88) and Brianna Ringgold (14:32.07) recorded the fastest times for the Alba-Golden boys and girls squads, respectively.
The state 2A girls cross country championship race will be conducted on Friday, Nov. 1 at 8:15 a.m. The girls 3A championship race is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2 at 9:30 a.m. The UIL state championship races in all divisions will be held at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
