Eustace, Quitman pitchers duel 1-0

The lazy rain last Friday forced the Quitman vs. Eustace baseball game to be moved to the park at Grand Saline. There, under a continuous drizzle, Quitman lost a pitching duel 1-0.

The two starters – Quitman’s lefty Canin Peppers and Eustace’s right-hander Adan Maltos – combined to throw a stellar game. Quitman’s Logan Davis came in to throw the seventh for Quitman, while Maltos tossed a complete game.

Each starter had excellent outings. The two produced a ton of pop-ups and ground-outs, never allowing the opposing side to build any offensive momentum.

As can happen in baseball, the initial out of any game can be as important as the final out. In the top of the first, Eustace gained a baserunner with a walk. A stolen base put the runner on second and a clean single brought him home. It was 1-0 Eustace in the top of the first. That was all that was needed to take this game.

Quitman appeared to be rallying in the sixth.

Davis Watson reached on a walk. Late in the count to Juan Rameriz, Watson took off to steal second. It was a perfect short-hopped throw to second which just nabbed him on the attempt. The rally never materialized.

The next chance to see Quitman at home will be Friday, April 4 when they host Mineola.
