Events scheduled for child abuse awareness month
April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and the Wood County Child Welfare and Protection boards are having events to bring the problems of child abuse to the public.
Monday, March 28 through Friday, April 1 has been designated as Blue Ribbon Week. Wood County schools, agencies and businesses are sought to take part by wearing and hanging blue everywhere around towns and communities.
Participants are asked to share pictures on social media and submitting to local newspapers.
Monday March 29 is “Team Up” against child abuse and everyone is encouraged to wear a team shirt or jersey.
Tuesday, March 29 is “Stand Together” against child abuse and participants are asked for friends to dress alike.
Wednesday, March 30, “Stomp Out” child abuse by wearing favorite boots or shoes.
Thursday, March 31, “Peace Out” to child abuse while wearing tie-dye and peace signs.
Friday, April 1, “Blue Day” celebrated by wearing as much blue as possible.
Activities will be held throughout April and will be highlighted by this year’s Candlelight Vigil at the pavilion at Jim Hogg City Park in Quitman April 26.
Booths and food will be available from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. with a special program beginning at 6.
The guest speaker is Pastor Mike Jeter of Pine Street Baptist Church and a foster parent.
The child welfare and child protection boards will be providing resources for how to become a foster parent as well as community support for foster families, grandparents raising grandchildren and the whole family.
