Fannie Marchman Garden Club announces programs for season
Fannie Marchman Garden Club began its second half of the club year with a hands-on meeting in January, called winter sowing.
Presenters Angela Thompson and Kim Hughes demonstrated sowing vegetable or flower seeds in repurposed gallon milk jugs. The jugs were cut out to form a contained area, adding potting soil for the seeds. Retaining the handle and neck allowed for easy carrying and moving, to protect the seedlings from inclement weather.
Feb. 17 meeting titled “Floral Bouquet - saving the world one herb bouquet at a time,” was presented by Jay White, the Texas Gardener Magazine publisher.
March 17 will be on Garden Love, presented by Angela Thompson, Kim Hughes and Sherry Ragsdale.
On April 21 members will travel to the Wood County Arboretum in Quitman for a tour and to dedicate a tree that was planted to commemorate Arbor Day. Members will take a snack and drink for their lunch.
May 19 will be the last meeting of the club year and will be held at the Mineola Nature Preserve, with members to take a dish to pass. New officers for 2021-22 will be installed.
Plans are being made for a garden tour of members’ gardens as a fund raiser, and details will be published later. Geraniums will also be on sale by members, available late March, to raise funds toward a scholarship for a graduating Mineola High School senior.
Unless specified, meetings are held at the Mineola Civic Center, 1150 N. Newsom St. at 9.30 a.m. starting with the program and followed by the business meeting.
