Fire department brings the heat to chili cookoff
The Mineola Volunteer Fire Department won the award for the best pot of chili and the best decorated booth Saturday during the 16th annual Chili Cookoff of the Mineola Kiwanis Club.
The Peoples Choice award, determined by $1 votes by the attendees, was won by the Wood County First Responders Association, and second place went to Nick Baker.
In addition to participant entry fees and admission for diners, the Kiwanis Club also earned money through live and silent auctions and sponsorships.
All proceeds help fund the club’s numerous projects that benefit children of the area.
Two of those groups also participated in the cookoff, with Mineola High School students entering their chili representing the Key Club, and the CKI club from Jarvis Christian University managing the drink table.
Judges were Kiwanis Division 34 Lt. Governor Matt Peel from Gilmer, Rose and Bob Upton of Holly Lake/Big Sandy Kiwanis and Sherry Bridges of Quitman/Lake Fork Kiwanis.
