Garden club ready for fall programs

Posted

Installation of new officers for the Fannie Marchman Garden Club for 2021-22 was held in May at the Mineola Nature Preserve – President Kim Hughes, 1st Vice President Rosemarie Kastrau (membership), 2nd VP Sherry Ragsdale (programs), Secretary Michelle Basham and Treasurer Angela Thompson.

Members requested to extend club activities throughout the summer months. June’s meeting held at the Nature Preserve included discussions on gardening and landscaping. Five visitors were welcomed, three of whom joined.

The first garden tour held in June was extremely successful, with over 160 visitors enjoying the five locations.

In July, Tonda Palmer presented a hands-on succulent workshop.

September is the official start of the club year, and Sherry Ragsdale  announced a full lineup of programs.

In October members will meet at the ag extension office in Quitman with presenter Emily Hussman at 9:45 a.m. November is the club’s Christmas celebration, with no meeting in December.

Programs starting in January begin with Brenda Swagerty on Plants of Texas. In February members will make bud vase flower arrangements to present to the nursing home staffs at local facilities. Both meetings will be held at the Mineola Civic Center.

March is a field trip to the floral department at Mineola High School,  and April’s field trip is to Bob Wells Nursery in Mineola.

The Yard of the Month is a continuing activity.

Arbor Day is recognized by donating a tree to a local community location. In 2021 the club donated to the Arboretum in Quitman. In Spring 2022 the club will be selling geraniums as a fund raiser to support a scholarship to a graduating Mineola High School senior.

May concludes the club year with installation of new officers.

Visit the Facebook page at Fannie Marchman Garden Club. Visitors are welcome to meetings held on the third Wednesday of each month at the Mineola Civic Center unless otherwise announced. Inquiries can also be made to President Kim Hughes at 903-312-2455.
