Iron Horse Festival has a little bit of everything

It promises to be a busy weekend as the Iron Horse Heritage Festival sponsored by the Mineola Area Chamber of Commerce returns to downtown Mineola Saturday, along with other related events.

The Mineola Landmark Commission will help get the weekend going with its fundraising Hobo Special Friday from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Iron Horse Square farmers market pavilion on W. Front St.

For $10 they are serving a hot dog, chips and ice cream floats. Take out orders are available. Proceeds benefit the commission’s historic preservation efforts.

Dance Dimensions hosts its annual 5K Iron Horse Rhythm Run Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Mineola Nature Preserve. There is also a 1K for children 10 and under.

The event steps off at 8:30 a.m. and participants will receive t-shirts, prizes and goody bags.

The event serves as a fundraiser for Dance Dimensions competition teams, and the excess proceeds are donated to various community organizations.

Mineola Main Street will once again hold a cornhole tournament Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on S. Line St.

Entry fee is $60 per team with registration starting at 9. Contact mainstreet@mineola.com, 903-569-6183 to preregister.

There will be cash prizes, drawings and giveaways.

Mineola Caring and Sharing will be hosting a car show. Registration is from 8-11 a.m. with judging at noon and awards at 3 p.m. Entry fee is $25. Enter from Kilpatrick St. off Hwy. 69.

The chamber will host numerous food, beverage and crafts vendors throughout the day starting at 10 a.m. along S. Johnson and Commerce Streets.

Contests include pie baking, watermelon eating and the popular weenie dog races.

Dance Dimensions teams will perform, the Flint and Steel Coalition will have a live mural demonstration, and an Old West train robbery and shoot out will be held

The day will conclude with a street dance at 8 p.m. featuring Rich O’Toole.
