Jackets stay unbeaten in district

The Mineola Yellowjackets came home with a 72-38 win over the Winnsboro Red Raiders last Friday. As important as that win was, keeping the Yellowjackets undefeated in district and on pace with Chapel Hill and Quitman atop the district table, Yellowjacket faithful also had reason to celebrate the return of senior guard TJ Moreland.

In his first competitive action in months, Moreland logged significant minutes against Winnsboro. He appeared as ready and able as he could possibly be – hitting five 3-pointers, executing athletic drives to the basket and moving with quickness and agility. He finished with 19 points and a lot of high fives from his teammates.

After exchanging early scores, Mineola went on a 16-0 run in the last five minutes of the first quarter. Dominance in the paint, a sharp shooting eye and pushing the ball down the court characterized the Yellowjackets play early.

It continued in the second quarter. The Jackets poured in an additional nine points before giving up a score to the hosts, well into the quarter. At the half, the score stood 38-12.

Once again, the rebounding technique of Braydon Alley, the presence of Dawson Pendergrass, and excellent guard play from Moreland and Keke Martin highlighted the first half action.

The game opened up even more in the second half, and Mineola never lost the rebounding edge nor the aggressive offensive attack.

Most noteworthy in the second half were a half dozen excellent assists issued by the Jackets. Alley, Pendergrass, Martin, Isaiah Gardner and Wyatt Kralka registered assists in second half action.

Mineola’s finishing around the basket, decision-making in the offensive zone and anticipation on defense indicated that the Jackets are indeed in mid-season form.

Pendergrass topped the scoresheet with 20 points, Moreland chalked up 19 and Martin 14. Alley, Ainsley Steward, Gardner and Jake Tyndell also recorded scores.

Mineola entered a short home-stand after the Winnsboro victory. They hosted Frankston in a non-district game Tuesday and welcome Chapel Hill on Friday and Quitman Tuesday.
