Jerrell “Jerry” Lee Sowell 1947-2025

Jerrell “Jerry” Lee Sowell went to meet his Lord on Feb. 3, 2025; he was 77 years old. Jerry was born in Goose Creek to Files and Maydelle Sowell of Deer Park who preceded him in death.

Jerry spent a portion of his life dealing with and working on old model cars and tractors,

International/Farmall being his tractor of choice. For both he was involved in clubs, shows and parades. He enjoyed shooting his guns and built his own shooting range on his property and became an excellent marksman. Jerry had an excellent memory with an avid love of reading. He had a wealth of knowledge and information and was always willing to share or lend a helping hand for his car and tractor buddies.

He was a self-taught photographer who loved taking pictures in and around Mineola. He even created his own darkroom, developing his own black and white film.

Jerry was a faithful member of First Christian Church and a dedicated adult Sunday school teacher. He had a love of God and took such pride and care when studying the Bible and preparing his Sunday school lessons.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Johnnie Ruth Sowell of Mineola; daughter, Regina Gaye Colella and husband David Michael Colella of Carrollton; son, Nelson Brent Smart and wife Mindy Andrews Smart of Arlington; and grandchildren, Taylor Elizabeth Smart of Lewisville and Jackson Cooper Smart of Arlington.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Kindness Kottage in Mineola.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Mineola.
